In October 2017, the National Institute of Justice awarded the Sexual Assault Forensic Evidence- Inventory, Tracking and Reporting (SAFE-ITR) Grant to the City of Miami Police Department. This grant allowed the City of Miami Police Department to partner with the City of Portland Police Department to utilize the Sexual Assault Forensic Evidence (SAFE) Kit Tracking Portal.
The (SAFE) Kit Tracking Portal was developed in 2018 by the Portland Police Bureau's IT Department in collaboration with the Bureau's Sex Crimes Unit. It was made possible through funding by the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) grant and shared with other agencies. The SAFE Kit Tracking Portal is a tool that allows survivors of sexual assault to anonymously track the status of their rape kits.
The portal was specifically designed with the survivor's privacy in mind and therefore does not require login information so users can remain completely anonymous. In addition, the portal only displays the status of the kit and does not provide any sensitive or personal information.
The City of Miami Police Department has installed the Sexual Assault Forensic Evidence (SAFE) Kit Tracking Portal on our website. Survivors of sexual assault must call the Miami Police Department's Special Victim's Unit at 305-603-6300 to request their barcode number for access. The SAFE Coordinator will verify the caller's relationship to the case then provide the barcode number within 72 hours. Once the barcode number is received, survivors can access the SAFE Tracking Portal by entering the SAFE Kit barcode number into the tracking portal. The SAFE Kit tracking portal can be accessed at http://trackit.miami-police.org or by clicking on the SAFE Kit Tracking Portal quick link at https://www.miami-police.org.
