Property and Evidence
The Property and Evidence Management Section is an element within the Administration Division. This section provides a comprehensive array of services through its Property and Evidence Unit and Quartermaster/Fleet Unit.
The Property and Evidence Unit is responsible for the custody and disposal of physical evidence and found property. Property and Evidence Unit employees are available to assist sworn and civilian members of the department
and the public on weekdays between the hours of 6:00 am and 3:00 pm.
The Quartermaster/Fleet Unit is responsible for the issuance of city issued vehicles, uniforms, equipment, mail, and office supplies to department employees.
To streamline the process of releasing property, an appointment is preferred. You can make an appointment on-line or call the Property and Evidence Management Unit at 305-603-6455.
In order to claim property belonging to you, you must bring PHOTO identification to the City of Miami Police Department Property Unit, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The Miami Police Department is located at 400 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami, Florida, 33128. If the article is a gun, you must provide PROOF OF OWNERSHIP. To confirm that a gun is approved for release, you should call the Property Unit at (305) 603-6455.
The original court order must be dropped off to the City of Miami Police Department Property Unit. The Court Order will be reviewed by the City of Miami Legal Unit and will authorize the Property Unit to release the property. At that time, a representative from the Property Unit will contact you to schedule an appointment.
The person claiming your property must have a notarized letter from you designating an individual as your representative in authorizing us to release your property to him/her. This person must provide photo identification.
Found Property is held for 90 days then it is destroyed or confiscated as prescribed by law.
In order for an owner to reclaim their found property, they must:
1. Come to the Property Unit, Monday thru Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm.
2. Present valid photo identification.
3. In the case of a recovered weapon, the owner must provide proof of ownership.
If the owner cannot personally appear, the following must be done:
1. The person claiming the property must have a notarized letter from the owner, designating that person as his/her representative, and authorizing the release of the property to him/her. No copies will be accepted.
2. The representative must present valid photo identification.
If the owner is unknown, or no claim is made for the property within 90 days after the property is found, the person finding the property will be entitled to claim it. If not claim is made within 90 days, the property is destroyed or confiscated as prescribed by law.
The Property Unit does return any medication to owners.
If your firearm was brought into the Property and Evidence Management Unit for Safe keeping, you must have:
1. Proof of Ownership
2. Photo identification
If your firearm was brought into the Property and Evidence Management Unit as evidence or as a result of a Domestic Violence Injunction, you must have:
1. An original “Return of Property” Court Order
2. Proof of Ownership
3. Photo identification
Note: AMMUNITION is not returned with the firearm
The Auto Pound operates from 7:00am to 3:00pm Monday thru Friday excluding holidays.
BEFORE picking your vehicle up from the Auto Pound, ALL charges must be paid for at the Main Property Unit located at 400 NW 2 Ave Miami, FL 33128 (First floor).
Then, you must present your receipt of payment to the Property Specialist for payment.
The registered owner of the vehicle the vehicle driver must display a VALID Driver’s License. If not, the vehicle will not be released and the customer will be directed back to the Property Section.
If mailing of property is requested, you must complete and have notarized a “Release, Hold Harmless and Indemnification Agreement” (A PDF version needs to be placed on webpage) and return this form to the aforementioned address. It will be your responsibility to contact Federal Express for an authorization number for shipment. Please include the Federal Express verification number along with your business and home phone number. MIAMI-DADE COUNTY RESIDENTS ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR MAILING SERVICE
IF YOUR RESIDENCE IS LOCATED OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES: Foreign country residents may request a forwarding company or consular agent to claim property upon receipt of a notarized letter from the owner, specifying the authorized recipient. Such representative must have photo identification.
REQUESTING A GUN TO BE MAILED: Request that your local law enforcement agency forward a letter to the Miami Police Department Property Unit stating that they will accept shipment of your gun (COD) on your behalf. The letter should contain the agency’s address, telephone number and the name of the person who will be accepting the shipment. You will also need to include a Hold Harmless Agreement and a notarized letter designating the agency your representative to take receipt of the weapon. Parcels will be mailed C.O.D. through Greyhound Bus Lines, Inc.
