Services > Recover Property

The return of property to an owner or authorized agent is dependant upon the type of property, method of return and the circumstances surrounding the impoundment. In all cases, the person retrieving the property must provide a valid photographic identification such as a driver license or passport. An authorized person or agent is someone that has an original notarized letter from the property’s owner designating him/her as the authorized person/agent to retrieve the item(s). This letter must be presented along with the individual’s valid photo identification at the time the request for return of property is made. Property can only be released during normal business hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm excluding holidays.

Property is impounded as Evidence, Found or Personal. Property that is held as evidence requires the written clearance from the State Attorney’s Office or a court order instructing the Department on the release of the specified property and to whom if the request is made prior to the. If the Personal or Found property can be identified to a specific owner at the time of impoundment, a letter is sent to the listed owner requesting him/her to retrieve the item within ninety (90) days. Failure to recover the item within the allotted time subjects the item to its confiscation or destruction.

Most vehicles are towed to the towing agency’s impoundment lot. However, vehicles impounded for investigation (i.e., homicides, sexual battery, forfeitures, etc.) are towed the Miami Police Department Impoundment lot located at on NW 7th Street between NW 3rd Avenue and NW 3rd Court. These vehicles generally have investigative “holds” and cannot be released without the authorization of the lead police investigator. For the balance of vehicle tows, the City of Miami utilizes several towing agencies geographically located throughout the City. The location where the vehicle is towed to is dependent upon the location from which the vehicle was towed. For exact location of the impoundment lots, please contact the police department C.I.S. Information Desk at (305) 603-6015 at any time.

Specific supplemental documentation in addition to the above:
  • Proof of ownership (original vehicle title or current registration only) is required and must be presented for the return or release of a boat, vehicle or firearm. Impoundment fees may also be applicable.
  • Items held as evidence or seized requires a certified letter from the State Attorney’s Office or a Court Order instructing the Department to release the impounded property.
